Empty Seat was built from rough cut oak using traditional all-wood joinery methods.  Amish plans for a dining chair dating back to the 1700s were followed as guidelines to the piece.  The artist cut, planed, chiseled, drilled, and sanded each piece by hand during the construction, staying clear of any power tools or saws.
